Writer of the Year Guidelines
Criteria
- Nominee must be a member for at least three years and in good standing at the time of nomination and at the time of the award.
- Nominee is a quality writer, having received recognition in more than one of the following areas: Writing, teaching, publishing, editing, awards, and mentor.
- Nominee motivates others through the following: Example, mentoring of new or would-be writers, service to the League of Utah Writers, and community involvement.
Submission
- Nominations must be received no later than July 15 of each year.
Nominations should include an official cover sheet with the nominee's
name and chapter affiliation and name, address, and phone number of nominating
chapter or person, nominee's resume with no name on it, and a nominating letter outlining
why this person should be Writer of the Year. The nominee's name should appear only on the
official cover sheet. If the name is otherwise revealed in the paperwork, the entry will be
disqualified and returned to the nominating chapter or person. The receiver cannot nominate
a candidate, either as an individual or as a chapter representative.
Judging Process
- No names will appear on the entries received by the panel.
Judges will receive weighted selection criteria and instructions from
the league president no later than August 1st.
Suggested Weighted Selection Criteria:
- 10 Publication within the last five years
- 10 More than one publication over a period of years
- 10 Writing Awards
- 10 Mentor to new or would be writers
- 10 Teacher of writing, either in schools or private workshops
- 10 Professional editor
- 10 Service to the League of Utah Writers
- 10 Longevity of league membership (1 point for every year up to possible 10)
- 10 Community service
- 10 Other criteria as determined by panel of judges.
Judging will include quality of contribution, not just quantity.
